2023: Gbajabiamila Opens Up On Contesting For Sanwo-Olu’s Job

…Speaks On Tinubu’s Presidential Ambition

…Explains Why APC Will Survive After Buhari

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila on Tuesday said he has not really given much thought to the possibility of throwing his hat into the race for the Lagos governorship seat in 2023.

Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, the Surulere Federal Constituency lawmaker, said he was focused on the task as the Speaker of the 9th House of Assembly and will not be distracted by such talks about contesting against the incumbent Governor of the state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Asked if he was nursing such ambition, Gbajabiamila said, “That question provoked a smile. I don’t have such plans, I have no immediate plans. I have a job I am doing right now, it is a very tough job on my hands.

“I don’t want distractions, I am working as the Speaker of the House of Representatives and there is a lot on my shoulder right now.”

While noting that Sanwo-Olu had performed well on the job in the last two years, the Speaker said such reports about him contesting for the Lagos top job was arising from the manner in which the former Lagos Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode was denied a second term ticket.

“As for becoming Lagos Governor, I have not even thought about it. Why? Because the Governor of Lagos is doing a good job. The fact that we had a one-term Governor does not mean it is going to be the same (in 2023) Sanwo-Olu is doing well, we will see what the future holds.

“The future is what it is. We leave it in the hands of the one who decides the future for everybody,” he concluded.

Speaking on the percieved presidential ambition of the All Progressives Congress, APC stalwart, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Gbajabiamila said though the ex-Lagos Governor was yet to declare his ambition, he was more than qualifies to contest the highest office in the land.

“Let us be clear on one with one thing. He has not declared that he wants to run. Should and when he decides to, if he decides to declare, you and I both know that he more than qualifies to run for the office of the President,” the Speaker said.

Questioned further on if Tinubu had opened up on his plans to become President in 2023, he said, “Asiwaju’s communication with me is privileged. The communication is privileged.”

But the Speaker submitted that capacity and love for country are two requisite characteristics the next president most possess, while adding that it was not out of place to take rotation into consideration.

The next president must have capacity capacity and capacity. Basically capacity and love for country.

“Under this circumstances that we find ourselves, I think rotation should still be considered, it may not be the ultimate but it should be part of what is considered. Nigerians wants rotation and it should be considered but capacity is important,” he said.

He agreed with the sentiment that any region who gets the nod to produce the next President will douse the tension in such region, however insisting that it must not be the deciding factor.

He said, “Yes, a South East President will douse the tension in the South East, same will be the case if the South South produces the President or the North.

“Equity and fairness should be a consideration. But the question is that is there all there is to bring a President?”

On if the APC will survive as a party after Buhari’s tenure, the Speaker said those wishing the party to disintegrate were only chasing shadows, just as he expressed optimism that the President’s legacies will help the party remain relevant beyond 2023.

“President Muhammadu Buhari comes with massive good will, his 12m votes is not folktale. Politicis sometimes is about personality.

The president has endeared footprints in a lot of people and that will come to play and I sincerely believe that the APC will gain a lot from the legacies of the President in years to come,” Gbajabiamila said.
